New, Dutch Ocean Fresheeeeee

The up and coming....

This little piece is based on the fish that I have caught along with some of the larger residents of Southlake in Woodley. I thought I would write about the up and coming fish I had the pleasure in catching in the lake, as you will see, size in this case isn’t everything. I decided to fish a 2 week period in October which resulted in a catch of 6 fish ranging from 9lb up to 23lb.

"
9lb 10oz"

Being small is hard work for these carp so when the get into the 20lb + bracket they will need to eat massive amounts of food to get in to the 30’s. When the carp are this age it seems like they have a long time to go before they can start putting on the pounds. I have found that the weight that they pack on between 20~30 lb is so much quicker and it seems a long time for them to get up to this weight in their younger lives.

"22lb 10oz"

The pictures in this piece are the fish we will hope to see at those magical weights we all want to catch in the years to come. All the big fish around start like this and maybe if good food is regularly supplied to this fish they can pack the weight on and one day this fish I’m holding could be a new record for this lake.

"The Snake carp a 20lb 8oz"

Now to the best bit, during the 2006 season the fishing was slow at the start due to too many anglers being on the water and pressure was playing a big part in not catching on a regular basis and knowing the fish had seen a lot of Oily Crab I wanted to mix it up a bit by adding some pellet to the equation.

"20lb 8oz"

The rigs I was using are from the ‘Carp R Us’ stable and consist of a length of 6inch braid tied to a size 6 nailer hook fished blowback style, which incorporates a stainless steel ring sliding up and down the shank of the hook, so on ejection the hook stays put in the mouth and the bait gets blown out of the way or falls with gravity pushing the hook home into the carps mouth.

"22lb 12 oz"

This style of fishing has really caught on over here in England, simply because it gives the angler more time on the strike. The angle on which the bait sits gives the rig a very positive effect, always sitting in the right position on the strike.

"23lb 10oz"

The fishing started to pick up as a lot of people were moving off the water so I decided to fish a swim called the bench; the swim itself contained a concrete monument with a gravel plateau in front which drops of either side to lake bed. I decided to fish a 2 week period in October which resulted in a catch of 6 fish ranging from 9lb up to 23lb.
