A Natural Bait....

The journey to the lake took hour in the darkness to drive in the car. My fishing mate and I had already visited the water before so we knew and discussed in length our strategy. Adriaan my friend was already fishing with this bait and he had a lot of good results. I on the other hand and knew nothing of the brand. When he first showed me the baits I was very impressed. The boilies contained high levels of fishmeal and had no flavour additives at all. The ingredients were all natural and though the taste was very strong ( I like a nibble ) there was little to no smell. At this point both of us knew straight away that this was the right bait for this water. The problem was that this water had seen so much smelly baits both fish & fruit it was difficult to catch the larger residents on this hard pressured water. This was mainly down to angling pressure and the fact there was so much natural food. We arrived at the lake just before 5am and quickly set up I cast one rod close to the far margin and the other in the middle, both had pva stringer of 4 half broken baits. It was just under hour when the left hand rod was away. The drill took a long twenty minutes to land the fish. When I finally lifted her out of the lake the smile came up and hit my face! She was a very thick carp and on the scales it weighed 19.6 Dutch Kilo’s. That’s 43.12lb in English weight WOW in less than hour with a max of 5 boilies I caught one of the larger residents of the lake.

During the weighing, my right fishing rod burst into life.  Showtime!  Also this fish is landed, a common of 28.6lb. The local fishermen came running over quickly, they saw the heavy mirror which none of them recognised this beautiful carp and as I was talking to them, Adriaan’s rod was away and he landed a common of 27.5lb. The other carp anglers said that’s since April only three fish had been landed. He closed the conversation with your just lucky but we knew differently but couldn’t be bothered to argue!

Later in the week I was back on the water and all day was very warm with lots of rain. The only real disadvantage was on my left and right now sat other carp anglers trying to get in on my action. As I arrived at the lake late I decided to set up between these two anglers and do a repeat of last times fishing, tired from a hard day’s work I went to sleep early. 03:00 s' night I was woken by my bite alarm.  At first the fish didn’t want to come in but with patience it finally laid on my unhooking mat. With only the light of my head torch we weighed and measured the fish, it was 98 cm long and 18 Dutch kilos!  The fish was photographed at the same time and swam off in the night. A few hours later 7.00am another run came.

"Bad photo mate!"

This time a common carp of 33lb I was very happy and decide to pack up, the other anglers either side had caught nothing. Just as I had packed up most of my gear my last rod in the water was off and in complete shock to the others another fish came to my net this time very thick common of 27.5lb.

With everything packed up I walked to the car with a big smile what a great session! I fished both sessions instantly with very few natural bait’s. Green Lipped Mussel was now my favourite boilie and it only took two nights to become my new champion! If you have a hard pressured lake with lots of angling pressure and natural food then I recommend you try fishing a boilie that’s as natural as possible, if it worked for us it will work for you I’m sure of it.
