One Night of Madness…

One of the highlights of every year is the start of the fishing season and this season is no different.  Even though a lot of lakes do not enforce this my current lake does.  Every Sunday morning during the closed season there are work-parties.  The more work-parties you do the better choice of peg you will get at the draw.

On the last weekend before the start of the season I turned up with my little piece of paper with the pegs I fancied.  Having done most of the work-parties I knew I was in with good chance of getting one of the top 5 pegs on my list.  As luck would have it I was 6th out of the hat.  I did get my third choice of peg though. I picked the Pink Pads which I've fished a few times before with some good results.

I got down to the lake around 2pm after sitting at work all morning thinking about my plan of attack.  Once there I quickly unloaded my tackle and got set up. I couldn't start fishing until 8 so I clipped up my rods and put out 1/2 kg of Ocean Fresh Red Shrimp & Garlic mixed with a kilo on particles.  Lovely!

All ready to go I headed down to the BBQ for a beer or 2 and a couple of dodgy looking burgers to celebrate the start of a new season.

Before I knew it, it was 7.30.  Time to get back!  Walking back I could see a few fish just milling about in the sun a few pegs up.  Confidence was high, as I knew the fish would have to come past me to get into the bay.

The first rod was placed 6 feet to the right of the pads on a bar and the second was placed tight to the far reed line hoping that I would cut off the fish moving through. That was it, the traps set.  I must of fell asleep because the next thing I knew I was attached to a very angry carp from the reed line rod.  After a hard fight I weighed it and put it in the sack for a few pictures in the morning.  At 25.7lb I was more than happy with my first night.

I recast the rod and sat back with a coffee looking for signs of movement. It was now 2am and I decided to try and grab a few hours sleep before it got light.  Before my head even touched the pillow my right hand rod on the reeds was off again.  This time it turned out to be a low 20. I quickly weighed it and slipped it back. I was just about to recast the rod when my left hand rod beeped twice.  I stopped ready to pounce. Slowly the bobbin started to move up.  I was soon attached to one of the most powerful carp I’ve ever caught.  After a 25-minute battle she finally slipped into the net.  On the scales she went 31.10lb Red Shrimp and Garlic strikes again.

As I lay in my sleeping bag more than happy with the start of the season, I could here fish crashing all around the bay.  Then at 4.30am I was awoken by a screaming run from the left hand rod off the pads.  After a short fight I had soon won the battle. By this time it was light and with a fish in both my carp sacks and one in the net I decided to call my mate down the lake to see if he could come down to take the pictures. After 5 minutes trying to convince him that I wasn't lying he finally agreed to come down.

By the time he got down I’d had landed another fish.   I had 2 fish in the sacks and 2 in the net.  The 2 in the net weighed 21.9lb and 24.11lb.

A dream session and I still had a night to go.

I had no more action that day.  To be honest I was grateful to get some sleep. The second day I managed to bag a common of 22lb.  There had only been 10 fish out over the 2 days and 6 of them fell to Ocean Fresh.
