Session 17.00 13/03/2009 - 16.00 14/03/2009

Owen and I fished this session at one of our local commercial fisheries, which has a varied stock of fish – Carp to 30lb, Tench and, interestingly Sturgeon. We arrived on the Friday afternoon with the temperature at 16 degrees, and flat calm conditions. Normally we fish this particular water with fairly light tackle – 1.75lb
Barbel rods & 6lb line. The normal stamp of fish are in the 10-14lb range, and the light tackle makes for good sport.

The method for the session was 2 rods each, 1 each baited with the BBQ sardine & Oyster boilies and small PVA bags of the same bait crumbed. We started catching virtually straight away. By 20.30, the temperature was dropping rapidly down to 0 degrees, but the fish were still feeding. We started by trimming down 18mm baits to use with size 10 Korda Wide Gape hooks on short Incognito fluorocarbon links on a running rig. After a while, we reverted to full size baits on size 8 hooks, to try and attract the larger specimens.
Interestingly, we were still getting 3-4lb Tench hooked cleanly in the bottom lip, with 18mm Sardine boilies hanging outside of their mouths!

By 3.30 am the action had died away, we managed to get a few hours sleep.
By this time, the temperature had dropped to -5 degrees with a heavy frost. Through Saturday, the temperature climbed again to 15-16 degrees, and we were still catching fairly regularly, although the fish were shyer during the daylight. The final tally was still good for the conditions. 27 fish in all, the biggest going to Owen, a Mirror of 15lb dead to Owen (pictured). Other fish of note were a 6 1/2lb Tench
and a 14lb Sturgeon (sorry - picture was rubbish at 2 am). Bearing in mind that this was, in all probability, the first outing ever for the BBQ Sardine & Oyster bait on this water, it accounted for 21 of the 27 fish, without any pre-baiting. We are looking forward to using it again.
